Boulder Rugby Club Summer Youth Program

The Boulder Rugby Club sponsors a Spring Youth Program for area for boys aged 15 and under and girls aged 17 and under. Our teams compete in the TRY league, which consists of approximately 15 youth clubs in the Boulder – Denver area. Primary emphasis is on fun and safety with secondary emphasis on skill and team development. All TRY competitions are 7 per side rugby, the game which will be included in the London Olympic Games.

The kids play on a smaller field, have shorter games (four 7 minute periods) and play with slightly smaller balls. Our Girls U-17, and Boys U15, U-13, U-11, and U-9 play tackle rugby while those not wanting to tackle and our U-7s play flag rugby. In 2011 we had over 60 kids participating in our program. The club supplies balls and jerseys so the kids only need shorts and shoes. The season runs May through June with our Winter Fitness Program at Rally Sport from mid-November through January. All games are played in Denver or Boulder on Saturday mornings. The program is staffed with USA Rugby certified coaches with many years of playing and coaching experience. Boulder has won State Championships in five of the past seven years and performs well in all age groups. The Boulder Under 15s won the Las Vegas 7s National Championship in 2010.

Practices are each Tuesday and Thursday from 5:15 – 6:30 pm in May and June at Valmont Park. Walk-ons are welcome any day of our season.

2012 Boulder Youth Rugby – Info Sheet

Welcome!

Boulder Youth Rugby season begins soon…Here’s some preliminary info!

Rugby Safety

Emphasis is placed on proper tackling skills that are taught by USA Rugby certified coaching staff. There will be an American Red Cross trained CPR/First-Aider at practices – for games, a professional athletic trainer will be present. There will be frequent water breaks on hot days.

Registration Forms

Everyone needs to complete a Registration Packet each year (even returning players.) It contains registration and medical information, as well as a code of conduct and waiver / release of liability. Bring forms to training/practice. If you already filled one out for the Winter Conditioning Camp, you’re good for paperwork. (see more on your remaining fee below.)

Roster

Once all the registration forms are in, I will create and route a team roster via e-mail. Please review the attached roster for accuracy and let me know if any changes need to be made.

Fees

The 2012 Summer Registration fee is $85. Please make checks payable to Boulder Rugby Club. Note: for those players who paid the $45 Winter Conditioning Camp fee, you only owe $40 now…please send/give to Jim Bruce or Maureen Taylor

Pre-Season Preparation

Please have your player begin jogging a bit each day. If he/she has new cleats, get them broken in and have him/her jog with them outside on a field or trail. Developing this kind of endurance is necessary for playing a rugby game.

Practices

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:15 to 6:30 pm at Valmont Park starting May 8rd through June 28rd. Use the Sterling Drive entrance to the park.

Please be on time for the start of practice and for pick up. Please respect the coaches’ and volunteers’ time by arriving by 6:30 pm for pick up, since they will not leave your player alone at the field!

What to bring to practice: water bottle, pre-applied sun screen and bug repellant (the bugs get really bad at Valmont Park!), cleats and mouth guard.

Practice volunteers needed! Each week, we need a couple of volunteers to stay for the duration of the practice to help with water/snack and have a car available in the event that weather suddenly changes (and we have to pile kids into cars!) Please contact Julie Perkins if you can stay at practice for a particular week. THANKS!

Games

The calendar has all the games listed, which are all on Saturdays: May 26  and June 2, 9, 16, 23, & 30 (the state championships) The games are within an hour’s drive from Boulder.

Carpools typically leave from Valmont Park at 8:30 am, in order to arrive by the typical 9:30 gathering time at the field when players are expected to be present.

For most games, kick off is at 10 am, with a finish time by 2 pm. See schedule for more specifics and exceptions. A couple of days prior to each game, an e-mail will be sent with specific information regarding the location, time, etc for that particular game, including any changes or updates.

What to bring to games: water bottle, pre-applied sun screen and/or bug repellant, cleats, mouth guard, and a snack or lunch. Families should plan on bringing camp chairs and hats/umbrellas (for shade)

History of Youth Rugby Programs at BRAC

Boulder Rugby operates several programs for youth in the Boulder area. The purpose of each of the programs is to expose kids the game we all love with emphasis on enjoyment participation, sportsmanship, and safety. The programs have been developed to allow participation of boys and girls from age 10 to age 18 and include both full contact rugby and touch rugby.

In 2002 the first under 14's game was held in Boulder the day after a wet spring snowstorm. Twenty kids, many of them sons of broken down men's club players played three twenty-minute halves to the delight of parents and kids alike. Since then, Boulder has fielded youth boys' teams each summer to compete in the Denver youth summer league. Boulder has dominated the under 12's competition by walking away with the championship in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

In 2004 an effort was launched by the club to the increase the participation of youth in the area and to expose a greater number of kids to the game. Touch rugby was introduced to PE teachers in Boulder County as a module. Each school that signed up to participate was provided with lesson plans, rugby balls and volunteers from the rugby club to introduce the game of touch rugby to their classes. Teachers at both public and private elementary, middle and high schools in the county have enthusiastically embraced the program. To date, over 2,000 boys and girls have participated in rugby through this effort.

All of the youth programs embrace the philosophy that the Rugby community is a unique group of individuals (and a group of unique individuals) who dare to try something different... a legendary game that mixes strength, speed and agility... a game that will forever welcome athletes of any and every size and shape. Successful rugby does require fitness, but first and foremost it requires that special person who's ready, willing and able to give it a go.
